Exercise

Suitcase Carry

One heavy dumbbell in one hand, and your obliques have to fight the whole walk to keep you upright. It's the exact skill of carrying a car seat or a loaded grocery bag without folding sideways - trained deliberately.

How to do it

  1. 1

Deadlift one dumbbell from the floor with a flat back and stand tall.

  2. 2

Hold it at your side like a suitcase, arm straight and shoulder level - don't lean away or toward it.

  3. 3

Brace your core and walk with short, controlled steps for 30-40 meters or 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Keep your shoulders and hips level the entire way - someone watching shouldn't be able to tell which hand is loaded.

  5. 5

Set it down, switch hands, and repeat on the other side.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning toward or away from the weight instead of staying vertical
  • Shrugging the loaded shoulder up
  • Choosing a weight so light your core never has to fight

Dad tips

  • Film yourself from behind once - a visible lean means tighten the brace or drop the weight slightly.
